Special for CAFS – Angola to regularize capital’s street names

(Special for CAFS) Angola to regularize capital’s street names

►► Angolan government plans to improve administrative management in the capital of Luanda by assigning street names and codes, Jornal de Angola, a local newspaper, reported Thursday.

About 62.5 percent of street names in Luanda need to be regularized, said the report, citing a member of the Provincial Commission for Toponymy, who said that in the Luanda Municipality of Luanda Province, out of 953 surveyed roads, about 41.6 percent lack official names, and 20.9 percent have unofficial names.

According to him, unofficial toponyms are present throughout the province. « We aim to align them with the Toponymy Basic Law and its regulations. Names that comply with the law can remain, but those that do not will be replaced, » he said. « The plan is to first assign names to streets, alleys, and squares, followed by assigning police numbers in a second phase. »

The Toponymy Basic Law defines a police number as the door number provided by municipal administration services.

The report highlighted that structured toponymy offers numerous economic advantages for local administration. It facilitates locating taxpayers for collections, taxing various services, property tax collection, fine delivery, fire services, and receiving packages and goods through the postal service.
